The Atomic and X-ray Physics (AXP) group of the Department of Physics offers a doctoral position (3 years) or a postdoctoral position (2 years) in the field of X-ray spectroscopy. The research project aims to advance reliable X-ray analysis of technologically relevant elements by determining fundamental atomic parameters (FAP) using complementary X-ray spectrometry methods, notably X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy as well as X-ray fluorescence analysis. The planned work will be carried out at the AXP laboratory and includes research visits to the BESSY II light source in Germany.

The objective is to accurately and quantitatively determine various fundamental parameters using various high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy techniques as part of a Swiss-German fundamental science project. The subsequent development of advanced nano- and energetic materials such as batteries requires reliable X-ray analytical characterizations to correlate device functionalities with the underlying chemical and physical properties of the materials in current applied European research projects (for example hymetbat.inrim.it). The reliability of these characterizations depends heavily on the knowledge of the FAPs.
